over the past year. nbc bay area's kimberly terry is in san francisco with more on what's happening tonight. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, it's a call to end the violence. sisters of perpetual indulgence and castro community on patrol will be targeting this area of the city tonight handing out safety information and offering advice. they also plan to give people whistles they can use to call attention to themselves if there is, in fact, an emergency. the groups say they are concerned about crime in the castro and are hoping the san francisco police department will join them tonight as they head into bars and restaurants to distribute the anti-violence materials which include personal safety tips. >> a lot of people come to the castro to have good fun. unfortunately, there are people who also come to prey on that. and so we want people to be prepared and to arm themselves with knowledge. >> it's interesting, we've been doing this for six years. we have passed out over 70,000 safety whistles and every time you hand a whistle to somebody, they've never heard of it

before. so the response really is, as though it's for the very first time. >> reporter: this isn't a new program, though. in fact, it's been around for decades. the castro community on patrol says this is a long education process that needs to be continued in order to make the castro a safer neighborhood. and even beyond the castro in san francisco, they say it is always important to be aware of your surroundings. be mindful of as many details as possible and make sure to report all crimes. live in san francisco, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thanks very much. alameda county sheriffs deputies came under attack early this morning after they chased a stolen vehicle into oakland. take a look at the aftermath. 106th and mcarthur boulevard. lots of broken glass in the street as well. deputies spotted the stolen car near hasberian boulevard around 1:00 a.m. that began a high-speed chase and ended at the scene of a sideshow. when deputies got out of their

vehicle, the crowd pelted them with rocks and bottles. a number of people were detained for questioning. it's unclear if there were arrests. no one was hurt. the car thief escaped. a fire that broke out a few hours ago in south san jose is now contained. the fire started in brush at a homeless camp on communications hill then spread to about five acres before fire crews arrived. fire officials say the fire wasn't threatening structures but they did call in the helicopter there just in case. >> it's dry air. it's definitely entering wildland season. we're fortunate there was still moisture, some green in the brush so it's not as dry as it will be later. it's an indication wildland season has begun for this area. >> the cause is still under investigation. officials say arson is a possibility. one person is dead, six others recovering after a violent crash in the south bay. happened 11:30 last night on blossom hill road. the driver of a pickup truck reended a car, lost control,

before landing on its side. the pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. six otherses were taken to the hospital. they don't know the cause of the crash but the driver was speeding. a 12-year-old girl decided to try to raise money for a mother and daughter who were injured when a car crashed into their home this week. she's hoping to raise a few hundred dollars the her lemonade stand today she set up in front of the house where the carash happened. this community set up a gi giveforward online page for the victims. >> i felt so bad. i told my mom i'd rather use my birthday money to spend on this little girl and they family. >> you can't not do something. just seeing the tragedy and seeing just, and knowing how awful it was, and it could have been any of us. you can't not do something. >> a car slammed through the wall of the home and into the living room this past thursday critically injuring a 40-year-old mother in the home

and 9-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. three passengers in the car were injured as well. police say two cars were racing down the street when they went out of control. police arrested two 17-year-old boys for driving recklessly and causing the crash. of course, the fund-raiser today with the lemonade stand. throughout the bay area today, people had the chance to do something about a different kind of drug problem by dropping off unwanted prescription drugs. the service was free and anonymous. most police departments throughout the bay area including this one in santa clara. the drug enforcement administration holds this event twice a year. officials say medicines that stay in home cabinets can be easily misused or abused. one man at the event says he has other concerns. >> i didn't want to throw any of the drugs into the environment. you hear all the time about the problems that it causes when people just dump prescription drugs. so we've been kind of accumulating over the last couple years and i missed it last year and i wanted to make sure that i made it this year. >> disposing of unused medicines

by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards. if you missed the event, the dea says contact your local police department for drop-off locations. from march madness to the super bowl, vegas draws in $3.5 billion for people betting on sports. compare that to the estimated hundreds of billions of dollars in underground sports betting. one california lawmaker is trying to legalize sports vetting in our state so we can cash in. >> nbc bay area's stephanie trong is live in san jose. stephanie, this bill in question failed last year. what's digfferent this time? >> reporter: last year it stalled in the assembly. state senator robert wright who's leading the way feels much more confident this time around because he feels he has public momentum on his side. we're live attica seen know matrix. a spokesman told me he feels this could put a big dent in underground betting, create new

jobs and kpracreate a revenue stream. no gambling on kplcollege sport have to be 21 or older, cash bets only and state would get 7.5% of the total revenue. californians spend millions of dollars on sports betting alone and could bring in roughly $75 million to california and that's not all. >> it would create jobs. i mean, it certainly has the potential, for example, to build up a sagging horse racing industry. because it would be another reason for you to go to a racetrack and it would give you something to do at the racetrack in between the races. >> reporter: in 1992 the federal government made sports betting illegal except in the four states that already allowed it. we're talking delaware, montana, oregon and nevada. new jersey is leading this fight to legalize sporting betting. it just lost a federal court case in february. governor chris christie vowed to take this to the supreme court if necessary. even if california passes this bill into law, it would have to

some of the boston marathon bombing victims were transferred today because this was moving day at their hospital. the rebelation moved its patients. ten of the patients were hurt during the bombings. listen to this story. among the patients a woman who lost her right leg in the blast. she says a young man picked her up after the blast, put a tuorn kit on the leg, stopped the blood loss, maybe saved his life in all the commotion. she did not get his name but would love to get it. thousands of people came by

boston's copley store to remember the victims. it's the first weekend the finish line area has been open to the public since the attacks. people dropped off flowers and wrote personal messages and there was a table where children could have their faces painted with the words boston strong on it. meanwhile nbc news confirmed the mother of the bombing suspects was added to a terror watch list in 2011 along with her son. she claims she was set up and continues to insist her sons were framed for the attacks. up next, was it too hollywood? did ben affleck change the story to win an oscar? an exclusive interview with the former ambassador to iran who reveals the truth behind the movie "argo." and the weekend starting off with a little bit of a warmup inland today. we saw temperatures approaching the mid 80s in livermore. quite chilly in san francisco. ahead, though, high pressure building in to give us an early taste of summer temperatures all across the seven-day forecast. we'll have a look a that wht th we come right back.

the lit movie "argo" tells a story about a couple from uc berkeley who helped save american hostages. >> berkeley native ben affleck ended up winning the oscar for best picture. in this case the picture wasn't necessarily true. our own raj matthai sits down with former canadian ambassador to iran, ken taylor. >> "argo." >> reporter: if you peel away the oscar, look beyond the glitz of hollywood and the terror in tehran, you'll end up where it all began. a love story in berkeley. ken and pat taylor have come a long way. they met in 1958 as international students at uc berkeley and little did they

know that more than 50 years later, berkeley native ben affleck would thrust them back into the international spotlight. >> i need you to help me make a fake movie. >> reporter: how much of it, first of all, it's a fascinating story. so many of us americans and people around the world knew about the hostage crisis but didn't know about this breakaway group of americans. >> well, the essence of the story is that six u.s. diplomats escaped out the side door of the embassy. after moving around, looking for some sanctuary, three stdays afr that they phoned a colleague of mine, said can canada be of help? >> reporter: canada saved the americans. ken was the canadian ambassador to iran. why put your life on the line, you and your wife? this wasn't just a few nights here. several weeks housing these americans. >> this was three months. well, i think at least with respect to the canadians, i'm not suggesting that we're any

more courageous or valiant or what have you than any other country. to us, there was no discussion. there was no discussion with respect to ourselves in tehran nor with the prime minister. these were u.s. diplomats in trouble. it was a right thing to do at the moment. >> reporr: but in hollywood, the right thing isn't always the truth. true or false in the movie, when you were watching this, were you upset by watching this movie because of the falsities or took pride it in? >> i was initially befused quite frankly, i said, i don't remember this. >> is there one night when the americans were staying in your home that stands out, whether sitting and having dinner, hiding in the corner of the house? is there something that stands out to you? >> two aspects. one wondering every night to ourselves, are we ever going to get out of here? we assured them they would, eventually. i think the other aspect is the

night before they left. when we were getting ready and convincing them that this is going to work. >> were they scared? >> well, yeah. they were wondering, you know, can they -- are they going to remain as serene and ambivalent as they go through the airport? >> after ben affleck won the oscar, i believe he did thank the canadians. >> he said thank you, canada. he did. ben is a very affable reflective individual and gifted as a director. the surprise in canada is there was in consultation before the movie. >> at the end of the day, it is hollywood, correct? >> yes. i think in looking back and reflecting and my, look, this is entertainment. this is hollywood. at the same time, if it said based on a true story, that's maybe where we lose our way. if he even said, roughly based upon a true story, i think it

tomorrow morning we'll see the clouds right down there at city level. 50s in san francisco. 80 in livermore. if you like 80s, livermore is is the place for you where it warmed up quite a bit inland in the tri valley. relatively cooler along the coast. tomorrow, all locations start to warm up as the sea breeze starts to back off a little bit and temps crim s climb. see the temperatures hugging the coastline. not quite to santa cruz. that will be the place to go tomorrow to see near 80-tree temperatu degree temperatures on the coastline. wait until the middle part of the week to see the temperatures warm up more further up the coast. tomorrow, continuing warming. most inland spots in the 80s. summer-like temperatures possible. as we head toward wednesday and thursday, this ridge of high pressure is going to build in. again, as i talked about, you saw it in san francisco, the low clouds, pretty dense fog around the coast and peninsula for tomorrow morning. then mostly sunny skies. then you get to the afternoon and we should get a little more sunshine on the coast, too.

so we'll see a slight warmup on the coast. 5 to 10 degrees of warming inland tomorrow around the bay area for inland valleys and north bay and out to the east bay. 40s and 50s tomorrow morning. areas of fog and mist for the morning. more sunshine and more warming for the afternoon. highs jumping 5 to 10 degrees around san jose. mid 80s tomorrow instead of the mid 70s we saw today. close to 0 90 in pleasanton. upper 80s around the tri valley. 70s and 80s around the north bay. san francisco, close to 70 degrees and more warming ahead. three-day forecast, temperatures climbing more into monday. breezy and dry tuesday. the second half of the seven-day forecast looks just like summer. you can see the numbers inland. low 90s into the tri valley and south of san jose. morgan hill, one of the spots that could get close to 95 degrees on thursday. that's where some of the computer models are showing. look at the coast. mid 70s. so end of april, into may. looks like it's august. it's going to be warm through the seven-day forecast. >> rob, thanks very much. >> we'll be right back.

a small business expo drew 600 people to mountain view today and thousands more attended the live streaming conference online. organizers at intuit and linkedin says the hired smart event is first of its kind dedicated to providing small businesses with the resources and advice needed to hire their first employee. >> the reason why this is so important to us, intuit and linkedin, is because today 99% of employers in the united states are small businesses. half of the jobs today in the private sector works for small businessowners. if our nation is going to continue to be strong and the world eegs economy is going to work, we have to help small businesses achieve their dreams. >> winner of the "apprentice" bill ransic. i'm david feldman in the comcast sports room. some people argue whether this a giants town or 49ers town. warriors don't like it. they beat denver. i'm not sure there was a better place to be in all the bay area than oracle last night. it was hopping. steph curry was there. he played bad ankle and all, scored a team high 29 points. the fans enjoyed an atmosphere th hadn't experienced in six years. henry was at warriors practice today and filed this report.
